HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope you didn't party too hard over the weekend (and if you did, it was safely!). Even though we're still dealing with the cards 2020 dealt us, let's hope that this year is going to be a marked improvement on the year gone. And to help you get through this year, it's time to feed your true crime obsession (or kickstart that obsession). Over the past through months I've been devouring a bunch of different true crime podcasts so thought I'd share some of my favourites and the ones you should be subscribing to this year! If you’re someone who loves podcasts but doesn’t always have a lot of time available to listen to 40+ minute episodes, then some short daily podcasts are right up your alley! Two daily podcasts you definitely need to add to your subscription list are Today In True Crime and Morning Cup Of Murder. As the names suggest, these podcasts look at a true crime event from that day in history. Whether it be the crime itself, the arrest, the trial, or even the birthday of a killer, the 7-20 minute episodes slot so easily into your daily routine. And because they’re so short, they’re also super easy to binge if you miss a few days here or there. And surprisingly, both podcasts don’t really double up on topics, so you if you subscribe to both, you’ll be getting two crime stories every single day! Probably one of the most well-known true crime podcasts is Crime Junkie, so if you’ve been living under a rock or just haven’t checked out an episode in a while, now is the time to dive in! This weekly podcast drops a new episode every Monday, with hosts Ashley and Brit talking through a crime story they’ve stumbled upon. The duo cover well-known headline crimes as well as the lesser-known stories, and you’ll 100% become a crime junkie as you devour the episodes. If you’re an Aussie like me, you can probably agree that a lot of Aussie crime stories don’t really get talked about in some of the other major true crime podcasts. So that’s were Casefile True Crime comes in! This Aussie-based podcast with an anonymous host has had a focus on Australian crime stories, although more recent episodes do focus on notable crimes from other countries around the world. It’s been so great getting to hear about the well-known and lesser-known Aussie crimes beside the well-known international crimes, so if you’re a fellow Aussie or just want a bit more Aussie crime in your life, this is a podcast to check out. Speaking of country-specific true crime, British Murders is definitely one to check out if you’re in the UK or just want to hear more about crimes that have taken place in Britain. This podcast is a newbie, so it’s the perfect time to start listening and catching up on the stories already shared. As someone who has zero knowledge of British true crime stories, I’ve found it super interesting learning about these crimes that a lot of Brits have probably heard of over the years or possibly remember happening. I think one of the podcasts I’ve most enjoyed because it really feels like hanging out with friends is Morbid: A True Crime Podcast. Hosted by besties Ash and Alaina, every week the pair tell each other (and us as the listener), a story that has caught their attention. It’s not just true crime, with unsolved mysteries, spooky history, conspiracy theories, paranormal happenings and anything else they find weird and wonderful discussed. If you have a love for all things weird, morbid and spine-chilling, this is 100% the podcast for you! Two short-form podcast series that are a MUST are Wondery’s The Wonderland Murders by Hollywood & Crime and Death of a Starlet. Each series consists of six episodes that dive into the stories of these Hollywood crimes. The Wonderland Murders looks at the 1981 unsolved murders of four people at the drug house of the Wonderland Gang – “It involved a drug-fueled gang of criminals, a crazed kingpin- and the world’s most famous porn star on a downward and deadly spiral.” Meanwhile Death of a Starlet looks are the 1980 murder of Dorothy Stratten, the 20-year-old Playboy Playmate who was just starting to make an impact on Hollywood – “To Hugh Hefner, she was his next Marilyn Monroe. To famed director Peter Bogdonovich, she was his muse. And to her husband, Paul Snider, she was his ticket to fame and fortune. All three ambitious men adored her. Only one of them murdered her.” The narrative storytelling in both these series is SO enthralling and it’s so easy to be sucked into the stories and devour all the episodes in no time. They’re super easy series to binge and I can’t wait for more series like this from Wondery. Speaking of Hollywood, if you’re into celebrity crime and scandal, then you really can’t go past Hollywood Crime Scene. Every week hosts Dei and Rachel talk about interesting stories, scandals and crime that have taken place in the glamorous world of Hollywood. There’s honestly a little bit of everything here, so if you’re a fan of the shifty side of life in Tinsel Town, this podcast is certainly right up your alley.
Finally, rounding out the list is another Parcast podcast in the form of Serial Killers, which as the name suggests, delves into the lives of some of the world’s most intriguing crime-spree killers. This twice-weekly podcast drops new episodes every Monday and Thursday, with each serial killer’s story told in two parts. The episodes look into the upbringing of the serial killer, what led them to kill in the first place, the killing spree they went on, and the investigation that followed. The format is very similar to many of Parcast’s other series, so if you’ve familiar with any of them, you’re sure to find this one super enjoyable to listen to. There are SO many more true crime podcasts I could have included on this list, not to mention I could have listed almost every single Parcast podcast, so I’ll definitely be back in the future with another list of podcast recommendations for those who want something more than just true crime. I definitely find that podcasts are some of the best ways to consume true crime content while going about your daily life, and that storytelling of the hosts in all the podcasts listed are to be commended – they all certainly know how to engage the listener in each and every story. If you have any true crime podcast recommendations, let me know below because I’d love to check them out! Happy Listening! Victoria :) |
