If you grew up in Australia, then you would be familiar with the awesomeness that was Yowie chocolate. But it wasn't the chocolate, although it was yummy, that had you begging your parents to buy one for you, it was the contents of the capsule inside the chocolate. What animal would you get this time? Would it be a new one, or would you have to trade with your friends?
It was a glorious time, that at some point during my childhood came to and end when Yowie production in Australia halted and they vanished from supermarket shelves. I didn't even know this happened until long after they were unavailable for purchase. But now they are back!
I'd seen on Facebook that Yowie would be returning to Australia, although no longer produced here, during April. One Saturday lunch time, while picking up a few things from my local IGA, I came across a small display with the words 'YOWIE ARE BACK!' and I suddenly felt nine years old again.
Although tempted to buy every single Yowie my supermarket had to offer, at $3.50 each, I wasn't about the send myself broke, so picked out three - Nap, Crag and Rumble. Would these new Yowie be just like I remembered them?
Yes and No.
Firstly, Yowie was originally manufactured by Cadbury. While the chocolate tasted nice, it didn't have that same Cadbury goodness that we had grown up loving. In fact, the more I ate, the more I found the taste to be weird.
But the taste was made up for with the animals I found inside. Originally, Yowie animals were in several pieces that you clipped together. It was part of what made Yowie fun. Initially, I was a little bummed that you could no longer make the animal inside the Yowie, but the size and quality of the animals is so much better than the originals. Plus, there was a little fact file about the animal, although I'm pretty sure they may have been in the originals too.
It's great to see Yowie back in our supermarkets, and I've seen a tonne of people on social media excited to be able to buy Yowies again. While they aren't exactly the same as the originals, they are pretty darn good and a great hit of nostalgia.
What do you think of the new Yowies?
