AUTHOR: Ashley Herring Blake GENRE: Queer Romance PAGES: 368 RELEASED: 22 November 2022 SERIES: Bright Falls #2 SYNOPSIS: For Astrid Parker, failure is unacceptable. Ever since she broke up with her fiancé a year ago, she’s been focused on her career—her friends might say she’s obsessed, but she’s just driven. When Pru Everwood asks her to be the designer for the Everwood Inn’s renovation that will be broadcasted on a popular home improvement show, Innside America, Astrid knows this is the answer to everything that is wrong with her life. It’ll be the perfect distraction from her failed love life, and her perpetually displeased mother might finally give her nod of approval. However, Astrid never planned on Jordan Everwood, Pru’s granddaughter and lead carpenter for the inn’s renovation, who despises every modern design decision Astrid makes. Jordan is determined to preserve the history of her family’s inn, particularly as the rest of her life is in shambles. When that determination turns into a little light sabotage, ruffling Astrid’s perfect little feathers, the showrunners ask them to play up the tension. But somewhere along the way, their dislike for each other turns into something quite different, and Astrid must decide what success truly means. Is she going to pursue the life that she’s expected to lead, or the one she wants? Who doesn’t love a Sapphic enemies-to-lovers while on the set of a reality TV show...
Designer Astrid Parker has been given her dream design job – giving Bright Falls’ iconic Everwood Inn a complete makeover. To top it all off, the renovations are going to feature on an episode of Innside America, giving Astrid the exposure she so desperately wants for herself and her business. And hopefully her mother will finally see her as a success, especially after the disaster that was her engagement. There’s just one major hurdle in the form of Pru Everwood’s granddaughter Jordan, who’s not only the lead carpenter on the renovations, but is passionate about the inn’s history and is vocal about her dislike for Astrid’s plans. The show’s producers love the drama that the tension between the pair is causing, but when the cameras stop rolling, the duo grow closer as they work to combine both of their ideas for the inn. For Astrid, being around Jordan allows her to explore her identity and come to some startling realisations about her relationship with her mother and what she wants in life. I have been hanging out for Astrid’s story from the moment I finished Delilah’s earlier in the year, and Ashley made the wait totally worth it! Considering that, the last time we saw Astrid, she was the “straight” friend in a group of queer women, I was intrigued as to the story Ashley had in store for her, and I thoroughly enjoyed every single second of following her journey. It was also a nice refreshing change of pace for me to have the main character on the path of figuring out their sexuality, rather than already having it all figured out before the story even starts. Just like with Delilah and Claire in the first book, Ashley brings her characters to life with ease and her writing style really does just suck you into the story and this world. I loved getting inside Astrid’s head and exploring her relationship with her mother first-hand, building upon what we got to see in the previous book. I really enjoyed the progression of Astrid and Jordan’s relationship, and between the differences regarding the renovation work and Astrid figuring out her sexuality, there was a lot of the duo to work through over the course of the book. Their relationship was cute and sweet with a side-serving of swoon and spice. Everyone who loves romance definitely needs to take a journey to Bright Falls, even more-so if you’re in need of more Sapphic romances to add to your TBR! And I can’t wait to see what Ashley has planned for the final book in this series, Iris Kelly Doesn’t Date! |
