AUTHOR: Kelsie Stelting GENRE: YA Sports Romance PAGES: 309 pages RELEASED: 1 January 2020 SERIES: Curvy Girls Club #1 SYNOPSIS: Curvy girls deserve happily ever afters too. I’m a big girl, “plus-sized,” whatever. I’m sick of hearing about it, especially since my doctor diagnosed me with PCOS. So when Mean Girl Merritt shot her mouth off about how fat people should just lose weight, I couldn’t take it anymore. And now I’ve got a huge problem. To prove curvy girls like me can get happily-ever-afters too, I have to get our school’s quarterback, Beckett Langley, to take me to homecoming. And he doesn’t know I even exist. But it’s not hopeless. Four other girls just like me are willing to help, because enough is enough. I will not lose this bet. Because who said curvy girls can’t get the star quarterback…
After she’s diagnosed with PCOS, hearing mean girl Merritt mouth off about how fat people just need to lose weight is the last straw for Rory. As Merritt continues her tirade about how guys won’t want to date curvy girls, Rory is determined to prove her wrong - Merritt bets that Rory can’t get the star quarterback, Beckett, to ask her to homecoming in two weeks time. Along with four fellow plus-size classmates, who quickly become her friends, Rory devises chance encounters to try and get the guy she’s always had a crush on. But Merritt isn’t going to let her win the bet so easily, and Rory could end up losing everything in the process. This book has been on my TBR for a while now, but my Facebook and Instagram algorithm really started pushing this book on me this past week and the teasers I was seeing had me HOOKED. I literally stopped what I was reading to absolutely DEVOUR this in one night. I got three hours of the sleep but it was worth it! As a member of the curvy girls club myself, this book was all too relatable and really hit me in the feels. I could totally see myself in Rory and her journey throughout the book was a rollercoaster of emotions. Kelsie filled this book with so much body positivity and the path to actually feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin. I adored the Curvy Girls Club and their growing friendship and can’t wait to see that continue throughout the series. Rory and Beckett’s relationship was so sweet and I really enjoyed watching their romance unfold throughout the book. It was sweet, a little swoony, and filled with so much heart. Beckett saw Rory for the person she is and not by her weight, which in part helped Rory be confident about who she is and that her weight, especially with her PCOS diagnosis, is not her entire worth. A bit of a trigger warning for diet culture and inadvertent emotional abuse from a parent - Rory has a bit of a tense relationship with her mum regarding her weight and feeling like her mum sees her as a failure compared to her skinny brother. It’s a little intense at times and a tad emotional, but Kelsie also shows the pair dealing with these issues at the conclusion of the story. Be prepared to read through the night as you join the Curvy Girls Club on a journey of love, and more importantly, self-love. |
