Happy Isolation Everyone! We're all stuck at home, or most of us are anyway, and I'm sure we're all struggling a little to stay motivated and positive as the world seems to fall apart around us. And if you're sitting there staring at the wall because you don't know what you should be doing during this time, this is the list to spark some inspiration and motivation. I'm sure there are hundreds of lists like this popping up online, but one more can't hurt when we're all stuck in the same situation! 1. Read through your TBR pile If you're a bookworm like me, chances are you have a TBR (to-be read for those who don't know) pile that's taller than you. Isolation is your chance to make a dent in it! If you aren't so much a bookworm, but still want to pick up a good book, try ebooks or audiobooks. There's a good chance your library has an online service that will allow you to borrow books, or there's Apple Books, the Kindle store, and Audible. My recommendations:
2. Binge on some TV series Isolation is a TV addict's dream! With more streaming services than you can poke a stick at, there's endless options for what to watch or rewatch. Start at the top of your watch-list and just keep going until you're allowed to leave your house again. For my fellow Aussies, I just posted a list of the ten Aussie dramas you should totally be bingeing right now, so make sure you check it out if you're looking for something a little different. My recommendations:
3. Have a Spring clean & declutter You've no doubt got some areas of your room/apartment/house that could do with a good clean out, and you've probably been putting off a declutter until you had the time - well now you have all the time in the world! It might be a bit much to tackle the whole of your house, so just pick a shelf or cupboard to start with and do a little bit here and there. Throw out/recycle the rubbish, donate what you can, find a home for things just randomly shoved on a shelf - even rearrange things for a proper fresh start! It's important to note than many donation centres like second-hand shops have closed and aren't accepting donations during this time, so do check with your local to see if you're able to donate anything, or be prepared to store items until you're able to donate them. My recommendations:
4. Pamper yourself This is a stressful time for everyone, so take an hour or two, or the whole day, to block everything out and recharge. Slather on a facemask, relax in the bath (while streaming something), listen to some music, take a nap, have a wine or two. Put yourself first and just take a moment to breathe. Keep it simple or go the full nine yards. My recommendations:
5. Do a puzzle or play a boardgame Depending on who you're isolated with, drag out some puzzles or board games! Seriously, when was the last time you did a puzzle or played a physical board game? If you're by yourself, a puzzle is the perfect thing to pass the time with, plus you can do them while listening to music or watching the tellie. If you're stuck with family or housemates, get everyone around the dining/coffee table and get playing. Maybe not Monopoly since you're going to be stuck with these people for the foreseeable future, but it's up to you! My recommendations:
6. Get some baking done If you love baking, chances are you're already taking advantage of isolation time to bake up some yummy creations. However, if you're someone who isn't big on baking or is a little inexperienced, this is your chance to improve your skills and wow everyone when life returns to normal. In a time of stockpiling food, aim for things that can be frozen if you're baking a lot, as well was things that don't need crazy ingredients - do a little planning so you can stock up on what you need since you don't want to be ducking to the shops every time you're missing one ingredient. And be mindful that other people are in the same boat, and so basic ingredients could have low stocks. My recommendations:
7. Get that DIY or craft project done I guarantee we've all got at lease one DIY project sitting incomplete or not even started around the house. Now is the time to do it, but within reason. I definitely don't recommend doing a massive DIY project that could lead to serious injury - our healthcare workers do not need to be dealing with you accidentally cutting off your finger while trying to build your kid a treehouse, on top of everything else. I'm sure you'd love to be able to get those big projects done, but this crisis is not the time for it. And it's not just DIY - if you've got some craft projects that have been on you're to-do list for forever, drag them out and get them done! Start that scrapbook, finish that cross-stitch, or get back to painting! 8. Start, or continue, your genealogy research Now is the PERFECT time to start researching your family history - you have plenty of time to sit down and start delving through the records and piecing together your family tree. And if you've had your research on the back-burner for a while now, it's time to dive right back in. If you know me, you'll know that I've LOVE researching my family history and have learnt so much about my ancestors, so I really recommend getting started on your research. Even if you keep it pretty basic and simple, you'll still be finding out about where you've come from, which is pretty cool. I've linked below some of my other genealogy posts, which includes resources, to help you. And as as side to this, I recently posted about MyHeritage's InColor program, which they are now offering, free and unlimited, to everyone for the next month. So even if you don't get any research done, at least take this opportunity to colourise your old family photos! Posts of interest: There's SO much more that you could be doing during this time, and I'm sure the hundreds of other similar lists out there have got other suggestions, but I hope this has given you some inspiration for how you can be spending your time in isolation. We may be stuck in our houses, but that doesn't mean we're stuck with nothing to do - keep being active and motivated, even when you feel like it's pointless. Imagine how you'll feel when we finally get past this crisis and you've checked off so many things on your to-do list!
Stay safe, wash your hands, and only go out if you absolutely have to! Victoria :) |
