AUTHOR: Alice Oseman GENRE: LGBTQ+ Graphic Novel PAGES: 263 RELEASED: 7 February 2019 SERIES: Heartstopper #1 SYNOPSIS: Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly, but could there be something more...? Charlie Spring is in Year 10 at Truham Grammar School for Boys. The past year hasn't been too great, but at least he's not being bullied anymore. Nick Nelson is in Year 11 and on the school rugby team. He's heard a little about Charlie - the kid who was outed last year and bullied for a few months - but he's never had the opportunity to talk to him. They quickly become friends, and soon Charlie is falling hard for Nick, even though he doesn't think he has a chance. But love works in surprising ways, and sometimes good things are waiting just around the corner... A cute coming-of-age graphic novel that’ll have you diving into the sequel immediately.
Charlie is the only openly-gay student at an all-boys school, and although it’s been a bit of a bumpy road over the past year since he was outed, things are finally starting to settle down. In his new Form Group, Charlie meets Nick, a rugby player the year above him. Their paths have never had the chance to cross until now, and it’s not long before they become friends. Charlie’s falling hard and fast for Nick, even though he knows he doesn’t have a chance. However, Nick’s slowly starting to question his own sexuality as he gets closer to Charlie. Charlie’s dreams might all be about to become reality... Why have I put off reading these books for so long! I flew through this first book and was a little salty about it ending on a cliffhanger – definitely make sure you’ve got the rest of the books at your fingertips so you can dive in right away! I really enjoyed Alice’s art style – it’s simple yet fun, and a great starting point for anyone new to the graphic novel genre. Charlie and Nick’s story was also super sweet, cute and fun, and I can’t wait to see where Alice has taken them in the rest of the series. If you’re a sucker for a cute coming-of-age romance, love graphic novels, and can’t get enough of LGBTQIA+ reads, Heartstopper needs to be near the top of your TBR! It’s a stunning series and I can’t wait to see how they’ve adapted it for Netflix. A must-read! |
