Hiya Everyone! Over the weekend I was invited to the ASC Next Gen ShowSkills Seminar as a guest speaker to talk about social media and how agricultural shows can best utilise various online platforms to connect with their communities. The Seminar itself was really interesting, insightful and inspiring, and it was great to connect with like-minded people who are also passionate about the Show Movement. Being a presenter was definitely a daunting task, but it was a great experience. So I thought I'd share my presentation here for anyone interested - it's a bit long, but full of tips & ideas you are sure to utilise. I’ve been running Social Media for the Finley Show for a decade now – since 6 August 2009 to be exact. Everything I’ve learnt about social media in that time has been from hands on experience, both with running the Finley Show accounts and my own personal blog accounts. So I’ve got no formal social media marketing training or a piece of paper that says I’m qualified in digital communications – which means you don’t have to have a degree in order to be able to make the most out of social media for your show. A big thing to remember - social media is FREE advertising for you Show, so you'd be silly not to ultilise it to the best of your ability. We all know how expensive advertising can be these days, so we need to be using free or cheap methods wherever possible. Make sure you have fun & are excited to create content! This is clearly something I LOVE doing, otherwise I wouldn’t still be doing it ten years later. And while we may be all very passionate about the Show Movement, we aren’t all deeply invested in or interested in Social Media. Trust me when I say that your pages and content will come across SO much better if you actually want to be there and enjoy what you do - you’ll actually want to create content, be creative and experiment with what you post. And people will be able to see that in your posts. Which platforms work best for Shows? The platforms that Finley use are ones that I use personally and felt could benefit the Show Society. There’s no point creating an account on a platform you yourself don’t use/understand/enjoy using, because you are probably going to have a difficult time utilising it for the Show. After ten years, I feel like I have a pretty good gauge at what works best for Show’s, and what is worth spending time on or not. FACEBOOK
