AUTHOR: Rebecca Jenshak GENRE: College Sports Romance PAGES: 353 pages RELEASED: 19 September 2023 SERIES: Campus Wallflowers #4 SYNOPSIS: He’s the last guy I should fall for. Valley U was supposed to be my fresh start after I escaped the glitz and glam of Hollywood. I didn’t want to be the former child star who graced TV screens across the world. I wanted to feel normal. When the same hot guy runs past my off-campus house every day, I assume he’s another college student. When he protects me from boys who still think of me as the character from their teenage dreams, I think he is being kind. When my past comes back to haunt me, he makes me feel safe. I’m falling hard and fast for a guy I barely know. Until I realize my mysterious new crush has a secret. He was hired to be my undercover bodyguard. When your secret bodyguard turns out to be the love of your life…
After Jane revealed her true identity as teen singer Ivy Greene, life at Valley U has gotten a little crazy. But one positive is the hot guy that runs past Jane’s house on a daily basis, and she eventually builds up the courage to strike up a conversation with him, inviting him to a party at her house. When Hendrick arrives, Jane attempts to get him in the party mood, which quickly turns flirty, but everything changes when someone breaks into Jane’s bedroom and leaves a threatening message. And it turns out, Hendrick is actually her new bodyguard hired by her parents to keep her safe now that her secret is out. Any chance of a relationship is now squarely off the table, but the threats continue, wanting Jane to leave Valley U and return to LA. As Jane and Hendrick spend more and more time together, the line between them becomes increasingly blurred, especially when Jane starts spending more time with Hendrick‘s siblings. Valley U has got to be one of my favourite bookish settings to return to, and Rebecca once again delivered a fun and swoony romance that I just could not put down! Jane has been a really fun character throughout the previous three Wallflower books, and since she didn’t technically have a flower name, I wasn’t totally expecting her to get a book, but I’m SO glad she’s Ivy and we got to round-out the Wallflower series with her story! Although I’ve loved Rebecca for her sports romances, I quite enjoyed her switching things up with Hendrick this book - yes he’s technically a former NFL player, but the main focus is him being a bodyguard, so we don’t get as much sport as any of the previous Valley U books. So while it’s little sad there isn’t more focus on swoony athletes, I’m not complaining about the focus shifting to a swoony and moody bodyguard! And speaking of moody bodyguard, I absolutely adored Hendrick and not only his relationship with Jane, but also his relationship with his brothers. And the way these two relationships overlapped was so sweet and really added a whole new level to each individual relationship. Grumpy/Sunshine and undercover bodyguard are two tropes that work SO well together, and I loved how Rebecca brought them together with Jane and Hendrick. I love that Rebecca threw in a little mystery with the whole ‘who is threatening Jane’ thing, and I definitely didn’t see the reveal coming, although it makes total sense looking back at the story. It was a nice addition to the overall story and I definitely think Rebecca could pull off more mystery & thriller twists in the future! A little trigger warning for threats and harassment, as well as a scene involving a character being slightly drugged. While I’m sad to say goodbye to the Wallflowers, I hope this isn’t a goodbye for Valley U just yet! Rebecca has crafted such a fun world across her books, and returning with each series is like coming home. If you’re looking for a companion romance series to sink your teeth into, Rebecca has got you sorted with all her Valley U books! |
