AUTHOR: Emma Hart GENRE: NA Romance PAGES: 370 RELEASED: 8 March 2022 SERIES: The Aristocrat Diaries #3 SYNOPSIS: An earl and an artist walk into a bar, and the barman says—never mind. They’re in a church, and they’re married now. Oops. My name is Evangeline Astley, and the only thing you need to know about me is that I never imagined this was how my life would go. I was supposed to devote all my time to painting gorgeous things to eventually open my own art gallery. Instead, I spent it all trying to sell my art to save my parents’ hotel. Cue the Earl of Anglesey and his not-so-stunning idea. Matthew Bennett needs an heir to the earldom, but for an heir, he needs a wife. And I’m the one the extremely eligible bachelor has chosen. Except I’m just as marriage-phobic as he is, so naturally, I refused—until he gives me an offer that I couldn’t. If I agreed to marry him, provide an heir, and divorce amicably in due course, he would save The Fox and Hound hotel that I love so much. That, ladies and gents, is how I became the Countess of Anglesey. The one thing I didn’t count on, however? Falling in love with my husband. I was kindly sent a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. A fake marriage is all fun and games until someone catches feelings...
Eva has always said she was never getting married – her golden rule has always been to never get back into bed with someone you left there. But then she starts having casual hook-ups with Matthew, the Earl of Anglesey. Which is fine because he shares that same views on marriage as her, and he’s pretty damn good in bed too. But then Matthew drops a bomb – in order to ensure the earldom doesn’t pass onto his idiot cousin and his family, Matthew needs a wife and an heir. The plan is simple, they get married, have two children, and after five years they divorce amicably, with Eva and the children well cared for. Matthew will also ensure that Eva’s family hotel, The Fox and Hound, is saved from financial ruin. All things considering, it’s a pretty good deal. What’s more, they both swear they’ll never develop romantic feelings for one another, even if all their friends think they’re crazy for believing that. As Eva settles into life in Anglesey and experiences all the beauty and magic that Isle has to offer, it’s not long before her heart gets ideas her head wasn’t expecting... I know I say this every single time, but I swear the books in Emma’s series get better and better with each instalment! I’ve really enjoyed all the books in The Aristocrat Diaries, and while I don’t want to pick favourites here, I think Eva & Matthew’s story is my favourite (although, if I went back and reread the books, I’d say the same thing about each story...). Fake relationships and marriages of conveniences are some of my favourite romance tropes, and Emma delivered a really fun story, as always. One of the things that Emma did so well in this book, and the series as a whole, is immerse you in the English and Welsh countryside. I’ve never been to the UK, but I felt like I was exploring the world in which these characters live. It was so easy to feel like a fly on the wall and part of this friend and family group. I’ve absolutely loved the focus on English aristocracy and socialites in modern times, and I desperately need more books like this – thankfully Emma’s next book will also be taking place in this landscape, so I cannot wait! If you’re a fan of Regency and Victorian era aristocrat romance, but also love modern day romances, then this is a nice balance between the two. |
