AUTHOR: Lana Ferguson GENRE: Romance PAGES: 400 pages RELEASED: 5 December 2023 SYNOPSIS: Mackenzie Carter has had some very bad dates lately. Model train experts, mansplainers, guys weirdly obsessed with her tail—she hasn’t had a successful date in months. Only a year out of residency, her grandmother’s obsession with Mackenzie finding the perfect mate to settle down with threatens to drive Mackenzie barking mad. Out of options, it feels like a small thing to tell her grandmother that she’s met someone. That is, until she blurts out the name of the first man she sees and the last man she would ever date: Noah Taylor, the big bad wolf of Denver General. Noah Taylor, interventional cardiologist and all around grump, has spent his entire life hiding what he is. With outdated stigmas surrounding unmated alphas that have people wondering if they still howl at the moon, Noah has been careful to keep his designation under wraps. It’s worked for years, until an anonymous tip has everything coming to light. Noah is left with two options: come clean to the board and risk his career—or find himself a mate. The chatty, overly friendly ER doctor asking him to be her fake boyfriend on the same day he’s called to meet the board has to be kismet, right? Mackenzie will keep her grandmother off her back, and Noah will get a chance to prove he can continue to work without a real mate—a mutually beneficial business transaction, they both rationalize. But when the fake-mate act turns into a very real friends-with-benefits arrangement, lines start to blur, and they quickly realize love is a whole different kind of animal. All the drama and swoon of Grey’s Anatomy with a spicy dose of the omegaverse.
ER doctor Mackenzie is once again dreading her grandmother setting her up on another date. Every single date she’s been on has been a disaster, and she’s more than happy with the single life. In a desperate moment to please her grandmother and get out of another set-up, Mack tells her that she’s dating a co-worker, the first name coming to mind being that of moody cardiologist Noah. All she wants it a selfie with Noah to placate her grandmother for a couple of weeks, but Noah makes a counter proposal - they pretend to be mated. With someone at the hospital having tipped off the board that he’s an unmated Alpha, something he had never disclosed, Noah is in damage control. All he needs to do is show the board he has a mate and that he isn’t a liability like society has stereotyped shifters like him. Their arrangement is simple enough, but when their Alpha-Omega connection begins to strengthen, biology takes over and they attempt to embark on a no-strings-attached relationship until Noah leaves town for a new job. It’s not long before lines begin to blur and hearts are put on the line. I have been counting down the days to this beauty from the moment I finished The Nanny! It’s felt like forever, but the moment I started reading I knew the wait had been worth it - Lana absolutely SLAYED once again and I just couldn’t get enough of Mackenzie and Noah! I genuinely struggled to put this book down and actually be a productive human. I’m a complete noob to the omegaverse, but I think Lana has converted me and I totally need her to write more (Jessica from Radiology totally deserves her own book at this point)! Throw in two of my fave tropes - grumpy meets sunshine AND fake dating - and what’s not to love! Plus, I ADORED the hospital setting with all it’s Grey’s Anatomy vibes, which made me realise that I really need to read more hospital romances or at the very least rewatch Grey’s… The omegaverse was just the cherry on top of a romance story that I knew I would already love! Mackenzie and Noah were both really interesting characters, both on their own and as a couple, I really enjoyed getting to discover their backstories, and seeing them with their friends and family. And together, they were grumpy/sunshine personified with really fun banter that easily bounced from light and fun to flirty and spicy. I could honestly read about them FOREVER! Oh and the spice? Fabulous. Perfect. Top-tier. A+. LOVE. You might just need a cardiologist when you finish because damn! I feel like this was a pretty good introduction to the *joys* of the omegaverse, so if you’re a total noob like me, this is a great place to start. Lana is two-for-two, which means I KNOW I’m going to love every single book she brings out in the future! If you haven’t read any of her stuff yet, this is your sign to spend the New Year break catching up on The Nanny and The Fake Mate! Now the countdown begins for The Game Changer…! |
