AUTHOR: Ella Maise GENRE: College Romance PAGES: 400 pages RELEASED: 16 April 2018 SYNOPSIS: In the game of love you can't afford to drop the ball... Zoe’s always been shy. At college, to try to help her, her friend dares her to do the craziest thing she can think of… kiss a random guy. She follows Dylan into a room she thinks is a classroom and ends up seeing a little too much of him. She can hardly kiss him now… not when after their embarrassing encounter and certainly not after he tells her he has a girlfriend. But when he finds out about the dare, the two make a pact… if they ever cross paths again – and they’re both single – they’ll kiss. Two years later, fate intervenes, and they end up as accidental roommates. Now Zoe’s seeing a lot more of Dylan than she bargained for and it’s even harder to resist peeking the second time round. Third encounters a charm in this roommates-to-lovers college romance…
Shy college freshman Zoe is dared to kiss a random guy at a party, resulting in her walking in on football player Dylan Reed showing off a little too much. It’s embarrassing enough for Zoe until Dylan reveals he has a girlfriend. A year later, they bump into each other once again, only this time it’s Zoe who has a boyfriend. When their paths cross again another year later, the pair end up as accidental roommates with a chance to finally get to know one another. Now that they’re in each other’s orbit, it’s hard to deny the attraction they’ve felt for one another since that very first encounter, even if Zoe is still a little embarrassed. But circumstances in Zoe’s life that involve Dylan’s coach complicate things before they even begin and secrets could jeopardise any chance the pair have for a relationship. You had me at football and roommate romance - these are two of my favourite romance tropes and Ella effortlessly served up both on a swoony silver platter! I thoroughly enjoyed how Ella crafted the story with the initial time jumps between Zoe and Dylan’s interactions in the first two years before diving into the bulk of the story on the third year - time jumps can be a tricky thing to make work within a story, but it really suited the story that Ella crafted. The romance between Zoe and Dylan is a bit of a slow burn, which I’m starting to enjoy more and more with each slow burn that I read. The pair had super fun banter and I loved getting to see their relationship develop from both of their perspectives. It was sweet, swoony and full of banter, with a bit of spice near the end. The only downer was that the pacing felt off in some points, and the fallout reactions of some characters felt both too short and too long for some of the situations. I also felt that we didn’t get to see enough of the developing connection between two characters after the situation was built up so much throughout the book. A little trigger warning for references of domestic abuse and rape with a secondary character, and a scene involving assault. If you’re a sucker for college sports romances like me, this is a book you need on your TBR! |
