Happy Hump Day Ghouligans! And just like that, both Buzzfeed Unsolved: True Crime and Buzzfeed Unsolved: Supernatural have come to an end! This is certainly the end of an era, and while I’m excited to continue following Shane and Ryan over on Watcher, it’s sad knowing we won’t be getting any more episodes in either of these iconic series. At the conclusion of the True Crime series, I shared my 10 must-watch episodes, so it’s only right that I do the same for Supernatural now that it has concluded. With 55 Supernatural episodes across 7 seasons, it was really hard to narrow this list down to ten – so many of my all-time favourite Buzzfeed Unsolved episodes are Supernatural ones, so it was certainly an effort and a half. But I’m really happy with the list I’ve created, so grab your popcorn and spirit box to watch or rewatch ghost-hunting adventures with the ghoul boys. As I said, this was SUPER hard to narrow down – in a perfect world, I’d just list every single episode, but then what’s the fun in that! So here are some honourable mentions that didn’t make the final top 10 cut:
3 Horrifying Cases of Ghosts and Demons (S1, E3) This is the first proper Supernatural episode (the previous two episodes were behind-the-desk episodes part of the first True Crime series), and saw the Ghoul Boys tackle THREE haunted locations – the Winchester Mystery House (which they would revisit in S5, E1), the Island of the Dolls near Mexico City, and the Sallie House (which they would revisit in final ever episode). All three locations are super intriguing and it was so interesting to learn about their histories and hauntings. From Shane scaring Ryan in the basement of the Winchester House, to spiders descending on them on the Island, and to Ryan having a massive freak out in the Sallie House, this was an amazing start to such an iconic series. The Sallie House portion alone is chaoticaly iconic as Ryan has a breakdown while Shane taunts the demon haunting the house. QUOTE: “Where’s my Holy Water” ~ Ryan The Haunted Halls of Waverly Hills Hospital (S2, E4) Personally, I find asylums and old hospitals super interesting – they have such an intriguing, albeit horrifying, history, and in terms of supernatural activity, always seem to be pretty active. Waverly Hills is the first of a few asylums/hospital that the Ghoul Bois visit, and it’s a really interesting episode. The history alone makes it a really enjoyable watch, and even if there weren’t any supernatural stories to tell it would be still so interesting to learn about. From Shane declaring the ‘body chute’ Satan’s cement butthole, to playing with a little ghost boy named Timmy, there are so many iconic moments in this episode. QUOTE: “Hey Ghouls! The boys are here!” ~ Shane The Captive Spirits of Eastern State Penitentiary (S3, E3) Just like with asylums and hospitals, old gaols are absolutely fascinating. Again, the history alone and the inmates they held are interesting enough on their own, but the supernatural occurrences are the cherry on top. This episode marked the first appearance of the Spirit Box, which is one of my favourite pieces of equipment used by Shane and Ryan throughout the entire series. Here, they use it to speak with Al Capone, resulting in the iconic “brown and white” moment when Ryan asks what colour the jackets are that they’re wearing. QUOTE: “That sounded like Will Smith. Is Will Smith dead? Has anyone checked the news?” ~ Shane The Horrors of Pennhurst Asylum (S3, E5) Look, there’s a theme to my list here – if it takes place in an asylum, hospital or prison, I’m going to LOVE it. Again, the history of Pennhurst is super interesting. There’s just something about the horrific treatments prescribed that I find fascinating, which probably says a lot more about me than it does the episode itself, so do with that as you will. You know an episode is going to be good when Ryan’s scared by an owl before they even enter the building. All the ghosts they are trying o connect with have really interesting stories, and in particular it was so fun watching Shane playing with Howie’s toy plane. Their individual investigations were so good, and we also get to see the duo use a new piece of ghost hunting equipment – dowsing rods. QUOTE: “I feel like back in the day they might have put you in here.”~ Shane The Shadowy Spirits of Rolling Hills Asylum (S4, E2) Okay I get it, I have a problem. But you can’t deny that these locations are SO interesting to learn about and explore! From wandering around the building, and dancing a little, to opera tunes while trying to coax out the ghost of 7.5 foot tall Roy, to using a dog to detective static electricity, there’s a lot different methods used to find evidence. The cherry on top of this episode, however, is Shane saying “may name is Shane’ and “mustard” in German to the nurse Emma, really showcasing how much he learnt during four years of German in high school. QUOTE: “You know I have a thermal cam right? I can see where you’re hiding.” ~ Ryan The Phantom Prisoners of Ohio State Penitentiary (S4, E4) If the episode is starting off by Ryan and Shane arguing over which is the more important film reference – Air Force One or Shawshank Redemption – you know it’s going to be a good one. On top of that, it’s not often that we get the ghoul bois investigating the causes of sounds during their history-telling segments. The reformatory looks absolutely terrifying, particularly under the night vision camera, and one of my favourite and scariest pieces is the sound picked up on the sixth-tier static camera during the night. The stories about the inmates are so interesting to hear about, and I definitely would have loved to have heard more. QUOTE: “This chair looks f*****g stupid in the middle of this room!” ~ Shane The Haunting of Hannah Williams (S5, E6) This is a really interesting episode in that Ryan and Shane aren’t visiting a historical haunted location, but the home of their colleague Hannah, who has experienced unexplainable instances in the new home her husband and children have moved into. The Ghoul Bois are finally doing a proper ghostbuster investigation, with the assistance of a medium. The episode flicks between the trio in the house, a pre-interview with Hannah, and then showing Hannah the evidence after the investigation. It was a really interesting concept, which would be repeated the following season with Loey Lane, but I really wish it had become a regular occurrence, or even its own series. QUOTE: “If they do think I’m a ghost, I’m going to give them the scare of their life right now” ~ Shane The Haunting Shadows of the St. Augustine Lighthouse (S6, E2) As I said in my post for the True Crime episodes, lighthouses are really interesting places, and this one is haunted by lots of history and tragedy. Learning about the history just on its own is really interesting as the lighthouse has played such a big part in America’s history. Ryan and Shane throwing out a bunch of different boat terms to reach out to one of the ghosts is absolutely hilarious – if Watcher ever falls through, they’d easily fit into ship life. And without a doubt, some of the best evidence they’ve uncovered comes from Ryan’s solo investigation using the Spirit Box, in which he speaks with Eliza and she talks about falling off a chimney. QUOTE: “Why are you leaving? ~ Ghost Eliza The Unbelievable Horrors of the Old City Jail (S6, E6) We got a full body apparition people! And Ryan well and truly lost his mind in this episode. Also there’s beat boxing with the Spirit Box. Plus Shane tried to seduce a ghost with his belly button. It’s a truly chaotic episode to end the sixth series. If the Ghoul Bois weren’t able to make a final season of Supernatural, this episode would have been a pretty iconic ending in itself. The final solo investigation, where they could explore the entire building, is one of my absolute favourites from across the entire series, mainly because of Ryan finally snapping and screaming, cursing & laughing as he ran through the building. QUOTE: “It’s gone quiet now and I’m afraid he’s dead.” ~ Shane Return To The Demonic Sallie House (S7, E6) We love a full circle moment! After the whole ‘Apple Tater’ moment in the penultimate episode, it flowed on perfectly that the final episode would take place in one of the locations that started it all – the Sallie House. I’ve already said how ICONIC Ryan and Shane’s first visit was, so it was great to be able to revisit the location, this time will all their ghost hunting expertise. In particular, the Spirit Box sessions were super active and you know I do love a good bit of Spirit Box activity. The cherry on top was also the fact that Shane and Ryan wore the same clothing in this episode as they did when they first visited the Sallie House, which was a nice little touch. Ryan’s farewell monologue at the end was also super moving and made such a wonderful send-off for the series and Unsolved as a whole ahead of the final documentary this week. QUOTE: “After almost six years of travelling the world, trying to answer the question ‘are ghosts real?’, we finally reached the end of our journey in the very place we started it. From chilling crafts to cursed catacombs; from no longer luminescent lighthouses to mystery mansions; from petrifying prisons to sinister sanatoriums; or back to the simple detective’s office where the mere act of wonder was enough. Our curiosity has treated us to things both explained and unexplained, the assignment of which is dependent on who you ask. But whether you’re a believer or not, I know one thing to be true: YOU believed in us. And for that, I’ll always be grateful. And sure, we may have never definitively answered the question of ‘are ghosts real?’, but in the end, and perhaps fitting fashion for a show that finds resolution in the unresolved, all I can say is I’m sure glad we didn’t. Because the pursuit and the friendship made along the way was far more fulfilling. I hope the ride was as joyous and full of discovery for you as it was for us. That being said, I ask you one last time – are ghosts real? For now, and perhaps forever, the answer will graciously remain, UNSOLVED.” ~ Ryan At the end of the very first Supernatural Episode (The Creepy “Men In Black”), Ryan said: “There’s going to be definitive proof of something happening, and I’m going to be there when that day happens Brent.” And he was there, for so many pieces of proof that the Ghoul Boys have captured over the years. Thank you Ryan & Shane for creating such a phenomenal series, teaching us a little history along the way, and giving us so many hilarious and iconic moments that we will forever look back on. While it’s sad to see both series come to an end, it’s been so great to be part of this journey and adventure over the past five years. Here’s to the next adventure over on Watcher.
If, for some wild reason, you only know Ryan & Shane from Unsolved, you’ll be pleased to know that they’ve been creating amazing content on their own channel, Watcher, which they run with fellow Buzzfeed alumni Steven Lim. While they aren’t doing Unsovled-type content, the series they have produced so far, which includes Puppet History, Too Many Spirits, Weird Wonderful World, and Are You Scared?, are perfect for Unsolved fans. Happy Ghoul Hunting Victoria :) |
