AUTHOR: Kelsie Stelting GENRE: YA Sports Romance PAGES: 416 pages RELEASED: 1 January 2020 SERIES: Curvy Girls Club #2 SYNOPSIS: How much money does it take to buy a broken heart? There are three things I hate: rich people, boys, and Kai Rush. Kai happens to be all three. He and his dad have all the money in the world from the game app they created, and what do they do with it? They buy private helicopters and flaunt their brand new Teslas. Never mind that people like my mom and I work multiple jobs just to keep our crappy apartment and pay for back medical bills because my dad ran scared and left us alone. So when my mom tells me we have a new cleaning job at the Rush’s before school, I’m peeved. When he starts texting me, I’m floored. Fit billionaires like him and plus-sized scholarship kids like me barely belong at Emerson Academy together, much less in the same message thread. How can I get him to see I'm not the catch he thinks I am? More importantly, how can I get my heart to stay on the same page? Because who said curvy girls can’t get the billionaire…
Jordan has felt out of place since transferring to Emerson Academy on a scholarship - she’s no where near the social and financial standing as her peers. And when she’s not studying to keep her grades up so she can eventually go to medical school, she’s helping her mother with their cleaning business to pay off her sister’s medical bills. But change in on the horizon when their next job - cleaning for the billionaire Rush family - has the potential to pay off their debts and give a good reference for future work. The downside is that now Jordan is cleaning the house of her classmate Kai. Jordan’s always had a distaste for rich people who have the resources to help those in need but spend their money on lavish houses and accessories. And Kai is no different. Until he starts texting her and starts to see Jordan for who she is, not a curvy poor girl. Dating each other would mean jeopardising her mum’s employment, but sometimes love means risking it all. After the first book, I was so excited to continue following the rest of the Curvy Girls Club members! I adored getting to see their friendships continue to develop, especially with the addition of Beckett to the extended group. Jordan’s lower socio-economic status makes her a really interesting addition to the rest of the otherwise wealthy group, making it more than just her weight that makes her insecure. Just like with the first book, Kelsie filled Jordan’s story with so much body positivity. And not only that, but a really big focus of the story is Jordan feeling ashamed about being poor and having to help her mother earn money just to get by, so there’s a lot of focus on Jordan’s friends reinforcing that they care more about Jordan as a person than the balance of her bank account. Jordan and Kai’s relationship was really sweet and it was fun following their romance unfold throughout the book. It was sweet, a little bit swoony, and filled with a lot of heart. At times, I felt like this book was treading towards more of a college vibe than a high school one - Kai felt more like a billionaire college student who could do anything rather than a high school billionaire who could still apparently do anything. And while I appreciated the divide between the wealthy and the poorer, Jordan did get a little repetitive as the book progressed - Kai was able to change his mindset after seeing the world through Jordan’s eyes, but Jordan didn’t really let-up her beliefs as easily after spending more time with Kai. While I definitely vibed with Rory and Beckett a little more than Jordan and Kai, this was a really fun addition to the Curvy Girls Club and I can’t wait to continue following these characters as the series progresses. Be prepared to read through the night as you join the Curvy Girls Club on a journey of love, and more importantly, self-love. |
