AUTHOR: Anna Daniels GENRE: Contemporary PAGES: 320 RELEASED: 26 April 2017 SYNOPSIS: Lucy Crighton has just moved in with some gregarious housemates called Brian and Denise… who are her parents. She's also the proud mother of Glenda, her beloved 10-year-old… kelpie. And she has absolutely no interest in the dashing son of her parents' new next-door neighbour… well, maybe just a little. When you're the girl in between relationships, careers and cities, you sometimes have to face some uncomfortable truths… like your Mum's obsession with Cher, your father's unsolicited advice, and the fact there's probably more cash on the floor of your parents' car than in your own bank account. Thank goodness Lucy's crazy but wonderful best friend, Rosie, is around to cushion reality, with wild nights at the local Whipcrack hotel, escapades in Japanese mud baths, and double dating under the Christmas lights in London. But will Lucy work out what she really wants to do in life and who she wants to share it with? Girl in Between is a warm, upbeat and often hilarious story about life at the crossroads. Featuring an endearing and irrepressible cast of characters, it will have you chuckling from start to finish. A laugh-out-loud read that you won't be able to put down!
Having moved back in with her parents at age thirty-two, Lucy has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She doesn't know where she wants to live, what job she wants to have, and she isn't quiet ready to move on from her last relationship. All she wants to do is write her novel, go for walks with her dog Glenda, and hang out with her bestie Rosie. But with barely any money in her bank account, her parents constantly worried about her life decisions, and her own worries that she's never going to know what do to, get married or have children, Lucy takes the leap to follow her friend Rosie to London. As she embarks on new adventures, makes new friends and finds love, Lucy finally finds her new path in life after reaching the crossroads. Never have I laughed out loud so much while reading a book - and when you're reading this at 1am with people asleep in the house, it's really hard to keep quiet! I swear every page had some hilarious comment or cultural reference that I couldn't help but laugh at. I felt right a home with this book and these characters, and I'd totally want to be friends with Lucy and Rosie, even though they are ten years older than I am. One thing I loved about this book is that most of it is set in Australia, and while I've never stepped foot in Queensland, let alone Rockhampton, it still felt so familiar to me. And with heaps of references to Aussie culture, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the book. Even with the overseas locations, I could totally picture myself there with the characters, despite never having been to those places. All of the characters were fantastically lovable and I would probably enjoy reading about them watching paint dry. Again, they were so familiar because I'm sure I know someone in real life who is exactly like them. I could totally see myself hanging out with Lucy and Rosie, or having tea with Denise, and stopping for a pie with Brian - they all felt so real. I really enjoyed Anna's writing style and Lucy's narration of her story, especially the random details and observations that Lucy makes about the world around her - they aren't essential to the story, but make the character feel so much more real and relatable, because of course I want to hear about how the new fish & chip shop owners were busted for selling drugs. It's these details that made me laugh and love this story. Its fun and funny, but there's also a really great message about pursing what you are passionate about, taking that leap of faith you've been too scared to take, and knowing that it's okay to go back to square one if things don't go as planned. Everyone, at some point in their lives, will reach a crossroads, you've just got to pick a direction and see where it takes you. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and really recommend it to anyone looking for a warm, hilarious and fun story with awesome characters that you'll fall in love with. No matter where you are in the world or whether you've reached a crossroad yet or not, you'll be laughing from page one and unable to put this fantastic book down. |
