But with her memories gone, now she’s back at the family ranch, And I’m the poor sap tasked with teaching her how to ride again. Avoiding her after the boss says she's off-limits is easier said than done. She has so many unanswered questions. And the more I get to know her, The more I want to protect her from a world she doesn't understand and can't remember. Sure... It doesn't hurt that she's the only woman in town not afraid to talk back, either. It's all I can do not to kiss her smart mouth every time she moves it. And when I finally do, Our relationship goes from strangers to enemies to forbidden lovers faster than the wind blows in Lubbock. Until a stranger rolls into town, and Gemma's forgotten memories come unraveled like a tumbleweed in a dust bowl. I guess the only question now is... When we're both born to run, who's going to fly the coop first? When life hits reset on your memories, you may as well make some new ones by falling for the grumpy cowboy and his adorable daughter…
After a car accident that brings on retrograde amnesia, Gemma Carter is headed back home to the small town of Sugar Plum and her dad’s ranch. Well, she assumes the man who turned up at the hospital is her father - she can’t remember him or anything he’s told her at all. Even seeing the place she grew up doesn’t jog her memory. After the doctor recommends trying to do her favourite things, her dad gets his farmhand and neighbour Asher to teach her how to ride horses again. Babysitting this apparent city-slicker is not what Asher wants to do, but he’s hardly going to say no to his boss. And Gemma doesn’t really want to spend a lot of time with this grumpy cowboy. But as Gemma tries to piece together her old life and is met by a lot of friends and family wanting her to remember things from her past, she seeks comfort in Asher, who never knew Gemma before and doesn’t pressure her to be anyone other than who she is now. As Asher and Gemma grow closer, so too does Gemma and Asher’s daughter Hazel, the less Gemma feels the need to learn about her old life and her focus is solely on building a new life and creating new memories. Until someone from her old life arrives in Sugar Plum and threatens to ruin her new life… Cowboys AND grumpy/sunshine? YES PLEASE, sign me up! Throw in a bout of amnesia and an adorable daughter and you’ve got yourself a must-read small town romance! I’ve never read anything from Ava before, but I thoroughly enjoyed getting my first taste of her work, and she’s definitely an author I’m keen to keep reading. And as much as I enjoy the smut & spice in my romance, it’s refreshing to read a clean romance, which Ava is known for. Gemma and Asher had some fun chemistry as they both began open up to one another and let the other in, insecurities and all. Both have a lot of their own previous issues to deal with, and they manage to overcome all of that together. The addition of Hazel made their relationship ever sweeter - nothing like a single dad watching his love interest fall in love with his child to help him fall more in love with the love interest! Amnesia can bit a little hit or miss when it comes to romances, or can under-deliver if the character’s memories come back early on in the story, but Ava had Gemma dealing with her loss of memories for the majority of the book. For Gemma, she went from trying to do things to bring back her memories to learning to live with the prospect that her memories might never come back, and that instead of focusing on the past, she should look to the future to create new memories and forge a new life. Ava crafted her story really well, and even though Gemma’s memories eventually came back and she had to deal with the crossroads she was suddenly at, I would have been totally satisfied if the book had ended without Gemma remembering her old life at all. I can’t wait to see what other adventures Ava has planned in Sugar Plum, which will hopefully include a little update on where Gemma, Asher and Hazel are at. If you’re looking for some swoony cowboys, an interesting small town, and some good ol’ clean romance, look no further than this grumpy cowboy and the town of Sugar Plum! |
