AUTHOR: Amy Award GENRE: Romance PAGES: 420 RELEASED: 4 January 2024 SERIES: The Cocky Kingmans #2 SYNOPSIS: What happens when the sunshiny pop princess and the grumpy football player discover there's more to this fake romance than inspiration for a new love song? Kelsey Best is America's pop sweetheart and anyone who says they don't like her music is a liar and needs to be punched in the nads. And I'll do it too, because I'm the guy the NFL dubbed the 'meanest player in the league.' Great for my career on the field, not so much for my reputation off it. So I'm shocked as hell when Kelsey's team sends my agent a wild idea – they want a showmance between us. She's looking to dodge the media frenzy after her breakup with Hollywood's latest heartthrob, and I apparently fit the bill as her perfect distraction. My agent is convinced this fake dating stunt is the key to fixing my image. But what happens when I fall for her? The whole world is going to hate me when we fake break up. But she's going to create a blank space in my heart and I don't think I'm going to be able to shake it off. America’s pop princess thinks its all for show, but the NFLs meanest player wants it to be forever…
In the thick of her national tour, American pop princess Kelsey Best is on top of the world, except for her ex constantly drunk dialing her, the press trying to invade all aspects of her life, her energy depleting by the day, and her record label pressuring her for her next album. But it’s all part of the pop star package, right? In a bid to get the press of her back about her ex, Kelsey’s team suggest a showmance with Denver’s own Declan Kingman, the meanest player in the NFL and the Mustang’s top-tier defenceman. Declan isn’t about relationships, but after developing a poor relationship with the media and being named the meanest player in the league, he needs something to turn his image around. But he doesn’t want to just fake it with Kelsey - he wants something real. As he watches Kelsey performs and work her magic, he’s not only enthralled but he can’t help but notice the struggle that is slowly growing as she continues to push herself to please everyone. Declan knows burnout when he sees it, and all he wants to do is whisk Kelsey away from the pressures of the industry and press. But Kelsey loves writing and performing, and taking a break isn’t an option when she’s in the middle of a sold-out tour. Declan must tread the line between protecting Kelsey and accidentally pushing her away if he wants to ensure his heart, and all of America’s, isn’t broken in the process. Hello Taylor Swift vibes! I absolutely ADORED Chris and Trixie’s story in book one, and I didn’t think that Amy would be able to top her series opener, but I was SO wrong! Kelsey and Declan we such a fun character, with so much fun and flirty banter, lots of sweet and swoony moments, and plenty of heart. And of course, the spice just tops the whole thing off! Their relationship is a little fake dating and a little grumpy/sunshine, which makes for a fabulous read and instalment in this series! Obviously, this book is oozing ALL the Taylor Swift vibes, with Kelsey and her fans - Besties - extremely reminiscent of Taylor and her Swifties. And in doing this, Amy is able to shine a bit of a spotlight on the music and entertainment industry, both the good and the bad, particularly in terms of the role the paparazzi and press have in the industry. It’s a great commentary on the entertainment industry, even though Amy does have the disclaimer that her portrayal of the music industry isn’t 100% accurate. Throw in an NFL boyfriend, and you’ve got Taylor and Travis Kelce in book form! Of course, Amy once again does a fabulous job with her curvy girl representation and the importance of body and sex positivity. Kelsey being a character in the spotlight means she’s subject to lots of comments and opinions from the general public, so I loved seeing her being able to rise above all the negativity thrown at her, live her life and love herself just the way she is. And once again, I really enjoyed getting to learn a little more about each of the other Kingman siblings, who we will all be following in due course. They are just a fun family, and I can’t wait to see all that fun continue throughout the rest of the series. I don’t know which Kingman exactly (Hayes?) is getting the next book, but I’m excited nonetheless - bring on TPND (The Pussy Next Door??) in June! Get down and dirty with a pop sweetheart in this swoony and spicy romance that will have you wondering how you too can become one of the Mustang’s cowgirls! |
