Happy New Year’s Eve Booklovers! Crazy to think 2021 is finally over – it’s definitely been a rollercoaster of the year, but there has been one positive constant in the form of books! So before we dive into the 2022, I wanted to wrap up my bookish life for the past 12 months. Every year, I love doing to ‘End Of Year Book Survey’ from Perpetual Page Turner, which gives me a good chance to reflect on everything I’ve read this year and get excited for another year of great reading. If you haven’t checked out Jamie’s blog before, you definitely need to – she’s got so much bookish fun in one place! So let’s farewell 2021 by looking back at some of the books I read this year! BOOKS READ: 40 SERIES STARTED: 17 SERIES FINISHED: 2 REREADS: 2 PAGES READ: 9923 AVERAGE RATING: 4.2 Stars 1. Best book you read in 2021? With nearly all my books being over 4-star reads, A LOT of the books I read this year were SO good, but only two managed to come out on top with a full five stars: 2. Book you were excited about and thought you were going to love more but didn’t? Tough one because there weren’t many books I didn’t enjoy as much as others, but I think it’d have to be Rookie Move by Samantha Lind – I’m a sucker for sport romance novels and was excited for this one, but it just didn’t level up to my expectations. It wasn’t a bad read, by any means, it just wasn’t what I was expecting and hoping for. 3. Best: 4. Favourite new author you discovered in 2021? Definitely Shirley Penick! I’ve loved what I’ve read of the Burlap & Bared Wire series (and I totally need to finish it soon), and I’m keen to dive into the rest of her books in 2022! 5. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year? A LOT of the books I’ve read this year have been unputdownable – there have been many times when I’m still reading at 3, 4 or 5am, and lowkey regretting it the next day (but also not, because damn these books are good). Top three most unputdownable books are definitely A Cowboy for Alyssa by Shirley Penick, The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun, and If This Gets Out by Sophie Gonzales & Cole Dietrich. 6. Book you read this year that you would be most likely to reread in the new year? If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for reading, although I have been getting better at prioritising new books over rereading (because otherwise I’d never read a new book and just stick to my comfort reads). While I hope to not reread many, if any, books in the new year, I definitely think I’d reread any of the Burlap & Barbed Wire books, or probably If This Gets Out. 7. Favourite cover of 2021? 8. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2021 to finally read? Definitely Heartstopper by Alice Oseman! It’s been on my TBR since it came out in 2019, but I don’t know why it’s taken me this long to get around to reading it! Although, given the first book ended with a cliffhanger, it’s probably not such a bad thing to have waited for more books to have been released... 9. Shortest and longest book read in 2021? Shortest: Royally Marooned by Emma Chase (6 pages) Longest: If This Gets Out by Sophie Gonzales & Cale Dietrich (416 pages) 10. OTP of the year? Considering all but one of the books I’ve read this year have been romance, this is such a hard question to answer! I loved Reuben and Zach from If This Gets Out, as well as Alyssa and Beau from A Cowboy For Alyssa. 11. Favourite non-romantic relationship of the year? Definitely the entire hockey friendship group from Rebecca Jenshak’s Campus Nights series – the whole gang was just so fun to be with and is probably my favourite friendship group of Rebecca’s. 12. Favourite book you read in 2021 from an author you’ve read previously? Both Emma Hart and Rebecca Jenshak are two of my all-time favourite authors, so you could honestly through a dart at any of their books that I’ve read this year – they’re all such fun reads and I’m itching for their new books in 2022! 13. Best 2021 debut novel you read? I only read one 2021 debut this year, but luckily it was a good one – My Sweet Enemy by Jenny Hartwell! 14. Best world-building/most vivid setting you read this year? Most definitely any of the Burlap & Bared Wired books by Shirley Penick – I felt like I was actually on a Colorado ranch, and if we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic, I’d have jumped on a plane to go find my own swoony cowboy on a dreamy and picturesque ranch! 15. Book that was the most fun to read? A tough one, but the honour has to go to Rebel Without A Claus by Emma Hart! It was such a fun and festive read, filled with lots of witty banter and flirting. 1. Favourite book photo you took in 2021? Cheating and sharing two - didn't take too many photos this year, but hoping to rectify that in 2022! 2. Best bookish event that you participated in this year? I only participated in two bookish events this year, both virtual, but my favourite of the two was definitely Gympie Library’s Rural Romance WriteFest event with Nicola Marsh, Stella Quinn, Eva Scott, and hosted by Rachel Johns. It was so fun getting to hear about these four amazing rural romance authors talk about their newest books, how they got into writing rural romance, and also tease what is coming next from them. 3. Best moment of you bookish/blogging life in 2021? I actually won a few bookish giveaways this year, which has been exciting! The first was a Heartstopper bundle from Date A Book (Hachette), then the entire 2021 YA catalogue from Walker Books, and finally the most recent (which is yet to arrive) is a cute romance bundle from Romance.com.au as part of their Christmas giveaways. 4. Did you complete any reading challenges or goal that you had set for yourself at the beginning of the year? I just managed to complete my goal of 40 books! Pretty happy with that considering last year was abysmal... still don’t know how I managed to get to 82 books back in 2017... 1. One book that you didn’t get to in 2021 but will be at the top of your TBR in 2022? There were a lot of books that I didn’t get to this year that I’m hoping to finally get to in 2022. The first is 100% House Of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas, which I’m currently halfway through but haven’t picked up for a while. I also really need to read Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff, as well as finishing off the Burlap & Barbed Wire series by Shirley Penick. So many books, so little time! 2. Book you are most anticipating for 2022 (non-debut)? There’s lots of books I’m excited for, and I recently posted my 2022 anticipated releases for January to March, but I think one of my most anticipated has to be Dating The Duke by Emma Hart – you know how much I love Emma’s books and I can’t wait to be back in the aristocratic world that she’s created! 3. Series ending/sequel you are most anticipating in 2022? Despite not having finished House of Earth and Blood, I’m super excited for House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas! 4. One thing you hope to accomplish or do in your reading/blogging life in 2022? Since I only just managed to reach my reading goal for this year, I’m going to stick to 40 books in 2022 – hopefully I’ll be able to smash that goal and exceed it! Otherwise, I just want to keep doing what I’m doing and continue reading heaps of fab books. 2021 may have been a rollercoaster of a year, but books certainly made it a lot more bearable! Super happy with how many books I’ve read this year and the types of books I’ve read – it’s now abundantly clear that I’m all about the romance reads! I can’t wait to continuing powering through my ever-growing TBR.
How was your reading year? Let me know what some of your favourite reads were so I can add even more books to my TBR! No matter how you’re choosing to welcome in the New Year, I hope you have a wonderful, and safe, time – see you in 2022! Happy New Year! Victoria :) |
